Michiel started his career as a rock guitarplayer. After several bands and projects, amongst them dutch rockband Vals Licht, and funk/soul project Spectalicious, and several recordings and tours, he attended the conservatory of Tilburg to study jazz. During this period, Michiel started to write a lot of compositions, which he played with different line-ups.
In 2007 he received a carte blanche from Paradox Tilburg, where he did a concert with his own ‘Michiel Stekelenburg Trio’, featuring trumpeter Eric Vloeimans as a guest. In 2009 he did a Funk Project with Shirma Rouse and Maarten Medden.
Besides BEAM Michiel has his own jazz-trio, and he is working with Zenga and jazz/soul band DelMontis.
